How are you?

I am happy in my life. I’ve always been positive and calm. I don’t get stressed there’s no point.

How do you feel about the weather?

I hate the hot sun. I enjoy the cold so you can wrap up warm. I don’t like the wind, it messes up my hair. When I’m at work and it’s windy we say “the kids will be high with this wind.” The wind really affects them.

What do you think about marriage?

We’ve been together 43 years. Most of the time it’s fine but there are moments when I find him extremely irritating and I have evil thoughts but for the most part we rub along nicely together.

How do you feel about children?

I always wanted girls and I had two. When they got married they had a double wedding and both married men with the same name.

What’s your most memorable experience?

Losing my sister to cancer earlier this year. She was 65. Because it’s so recent it’s still very raw.

How do you see yourself?

I’m a survivor. I had cancer in 1998. They found cells they didn't like and I had to have a mastectomy. I didn't dwell, I just got on with it and I’m still here.

How do you feel about body image?

Well obviously I’m not happy (looking at her body in disappointment) I need to be in proportion. I used to buy clothes that were too small for me and I would literally burst out of them. Attitudes have changed these days and now anything goes. But for me, I do need to lose some weight.

What are your dreams?

When I was young I wanted to be a hairdresser. I thought it would be really glamorous but my mum wouldn’t let me. I think she thought I had ideas above my station. She worked as a London bus conductor. Sometimes known as a ‘chippy’.

These days I thrive on routine. I’m quite boring really and I find the daily routine is good for me.

How do you best express yourself?

By singing in the car. I love to belt out Elvis songs. I love doing things with my hands. I knit and sew and enjoy being out in the garden. I’ve recently taken up line dancing too.

Who or what inspires you?

My daughter. After she had her two children she managed to get a degree whilst working and looking after the kids.

People who overcome adversity inspire me. My sister inspired me by how she dealt with the end of her life. Nature inspires me too; one of my favourite things is to stand on top of a cliff and look out over the sea and watch how the water behaves.

What do you think about life?

Sometimes the world isn’t a very nice place. Although I think the majority of people do have a good life, I feel sorry for the ones who don’t. There’s little you can do to help except offer sympathy and a bit of money. We're so lucky.

How do you feel about death?

I’d like to live another 20 years then I'm done and you can cremate me.

When my sister died there was a cat sat outside her bedroom window. It was as if she was helping her in some way. Later that day I opened my purse to find a large white feather. I’m not religious but I do think there’s something - I like the signs.

Are you free?

Yes, I feel liberated.

What are your thoughts about today?

I’ve enjoyed it. It's unearthed my emotions. I have felt raw at times but that’s understandable.
