Ruby 65 from Liverpool. Single and lives in London with one adopted child.

How are you?

I’m absolutely fine thank you. I’m very independent. I’ve always done things on my own. I don’t need support, I never have. I think it’s something to do with being adopted when I was ten weeks old.

What’s your most memorable experience?

I used to work for the Ministry of Defence. Part of my job was to open the post. One particular morning I opened an incendiary device. Thankfully it didn't go off but there was a moment when I thought - this is it!

I remember back when I first came to London. I got myself a Triumph Spitfire. I had an Afghan hound at the time and he and I would ride around London with the roof open. There was such a lovely sense of freedom.

What do you think about marriage?

I knew I never wanted to get married.

How do you feel about kids?

It’s a situation I can’t talk about. But I found myself becoming a parent at 56 years old. I didn't expect it. I’d just retired. I did what anyone would do and what was right for the child. There’s very little I wouldn't do for him but I don’t identify myself through him.

How do other people see you?

I don't care and I don't suffer fools.

What brings you down?

I don’t get down, although I can’t bear injustices.

What are your dreams?

My fantasy is that I am so strong that if anyone is aggressive towards me I can do karate moves that leaves them on the floor.

How do you see yourself?

As a little elderly lady and I like that. I can listen into conversations on the tube and nobody is aware that I’m listening. I always dress down, I don’t like to attract attention. I like to observe and watch the world go by. I don’t see myself as anything special. I don’t drink or smoke and I am a veggie. I wish I’d had a more academic learning though. I’m not a very well developed individual - I’m not well rounded. (I know I normally don’t pass comment on what is said in these interviews but I feel compelled to say, she is a remarkable woman and is very well rounded!)

What are your views on body image?

I’d like to be slim, who wouldn’t? In the past how fat or thin I was affected whether I’d go out or not.

What do you like about yourself?

I’m quite brave and confident. I always speak out. Years before Women’s Lib I knew I was equal to men. Maybe not physically as strong but definitely equal. I can be quite provoking. I don’t lie, I’d rather offend than lie. I have a generous spirit and am very nosey. I am interested in people. I get to the essence of people very quickly. I can tell a bullshitter straight away. I very much please myself.

How do you best express yourself?

On paper. I'm a letter writer. I like to sing and I am forever talking to myself.

Who or what inspires you?

Peter Tatchell - he’s the gay rights activist. He shows true bravery and heroism. He sticks to his guns.

Where does all your energy go?

I’m always on the go. I'll do anything to avoid housework.

What do you think about life?

Life is tough then you die!

How do you feel about death?

It comes to us all. I’m not frightened. I don’t want to be in pain. I don’t want to leave my son undefended.

What would you like to leave for the next generation?

I’d like to leave my son a home that he values and appreciates.

Are you free?

Yes. I am a free thinker. My thoughts are free and I have free speech.

What have you taken from today?

It’s been lovely to chat and get to know more about you (she means me) I haven't learned anything about myself. I’ve had 65 years to learn about me and I know myself well.
