How are you?

I’m fine. My mum isn't well though, to see her is very important to me.

How do you feel about the weather?

Oh gosh… the weather. I don’t like it here in London when it’s hot. It’s like you’re inside a vacuum cleaner. I just need to be where I can feel free. When I go back home to St Lucia I get off the plane and the rush of heat pushes me back inside. I gasp, then step outside again and then I am home!

What do you think about children?

When we started talking about how children could divorce their parents then there’s a flaw in the system. When you take away the rights (or even the very suggestion) from parents, chaos is around the corner.

How do you see yourself?

Here in England, everyone is always rushing. I'm a free spirit. I long to be free. Freedom is everything to me.

What are your dreams?

To be back home in St Lucia. When I see my mountains I’m encased. They can’t send me back. I’m home. To be at one with nature. There, there is everything you've ever needed or wanted: fresh fruit ripe for the picking. If it was only me to consider, I’d be back there like a shot. No men, no kids to think about, just me. We live in matchboxes here. Humans need space.

What are your views on faith?

I am a Rastafarian, it’s a way of life, not a religion. You live a certain way. It’s organically grown. We don’t do Christmas or birthdays. When my birthday comes I call it my new year.

Where does all your energy go?

Into my family.

What’s your most memorable experience?

When I was a child I remember when my grandad was ill. He’d gather honeysuckle and fennel and make a tea and bathe in the petals.

Another vivid memory I have was back in St Lucia, sitting barefoot under a mango tree on a beautiful sunny day. I was having a spliff and reading the Quran. Everything just felt right. It’s those moments I love.

What do you like about yourself?

I like most things. I like my attitude to life.

How do you best express yourself?

Sometimes by not saying anything. Actions speak louder than words. My words don’t get through anymore.

What do you think about life?

I think it’s important to say what you mean and to do it at the start of something, otherwise people run rings around you.

Everyone has good in them, it’s just dragging it out of them. I don’t understand why people put themselves in a class - people are just people, there are too many things going on in the world to be worried about your social status.

Who or what inspires you?

My mother and my father.

What would you like to leave for the next generation?

England can be a cold place and sometimes that’s down to the people, not just the weather. People don’t greet each other in London. If you manage to make someone smile, then that’s a plus. There’s too much traffic, hustle and bustle. Everyone is so busy doing their own thing; climbing up the imaginary ladder to success - looking after number one. People don’t care about one another.

Are you free?

I’m always free but I feel freer in the Caribbean.

What have you taken from doing this today?

It’s brought back a lot of good memories. Telling someone about the place where you grew up is a living memory. By telling you about St Lucia, I can actually see it. It’s like walking you through my history. We always have to remember where we come from.
